Fort Ceraino, formerly known as Fort Hlawaty, was built by the Austrians. In 1866 it passed into Italian hands and was renamed Fort Ceraino (from the name of the village where it is situated).

The fort stands at an altitude of 236 m a.m.s.l. on a plateau dominating the Valle dell'Adige on the slopes of Mount Pastello. Now as in the past, it can be reached in about 30 minutes along a narrow military road starting from the village of Ceraino, then going on to link the fort to Fort Monte.

It was built entirely in local red ammonite stone. The Fort is surrounded by a moat about three metres wide and three metres deep, narrowing on the side of the rock.

There is a drawbridge at the entrance. Inside there is a yard with large rainwater cisterns and ingenious canalisation systems. The interior is well designed, with various rooms destined for different uses. Utilised in recent years by the State Forestry Service, its current state of abandon threatens its fair state of preservation.

Unfortunately, only ruins of this fort in fact survive, as before abandoning it, the German soldiers set fire to the gunpowder stored inside. It is still, however, well worth taking a delightful walk with sweeping curves along the mountain, with magnificent views from the path looking across the Valdadige.
