The Bridge is located on the border of the municipality of Sant’Anna d’Alfaedo in the village of Giare and represents the most important geological attraction in Lessinia. This gigantic natural arch was formed through collapse of the roof of the original karst cave created in the limestone rock over millions of years through erosion by the water penetrating from outside. At the base of the bridge are two caves containing artefacts dating from the middle and early Paleolithic, now preserved in the Museum of Paleontology and Prehistory. A number of caves near the bridge contain abundant ochre (a natural colorant earth) used until the end of the 1950s.
According to tradition, Dante Alighieri is said to have drawn inspiration for the Eighth Circle of Hell from the shape of the bridge, while the famous Andrea Mantegna portrayed it in the frescoes of the Bridal Chamber in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
