Surrounded by green hills and bordered by a wide torrent, the Negrar area occupies the easternmost part of Valpolicella as far as the Lessini Mountains to the north. The name Negrar would seem to derive from the late Latin Nigrariu meaning “place of black earth”.

The splendour of this territory is confirmed by the discovery of numerous flint artefacts dating from the Paleolithic and the presence of fortified hill villages (“castellieri”) dating from the Bronze and Iron ages.

Like the whole Valpolicella valley, Negrar has warm temperatures, nearly Mediterranean, thanks to the Lake Garda and the defence of the contiguous mountains from colder winds, that allows the growth of olives, vineyards and other different products, like cherries. 

The area has become important thanks to the wine culture with a large number of cellars and events linked to Valpolicella's wine such as Vetrina dell'Amarone and Palio del Recioto and Amarone.

Negrar offers many routes in which visitors can be surrounded by nature and the many churches and villas of the village (one of them is the famous Villa Rizzardi and its geometric garden). Here are some suggested itineraries :
